Short for "motor pedacycle," the scooter and mopeds has been around since the Michauz-Perreaux steam cycle, a velocipede fitted with pedals, a steam engine, and a boiler in the late 1800s. Many developments later, the Whizzer was introduced first as a bolt-on motor and then as a complete cycle. The evolution of mopeds and motor bikes continued through the mid-1900s. In 1946, a 50 cc engine, dubbed "the mini-motor" and designed to provide power to portable lathes, was mounted on the rear wheels of bicycles. Another motorized bike was also made available in 1946 by Solex of Paris, France. Instead of being attached to the rear wheel, as was the case with the mini-motor, this was an above-the-front-wheel 49 cc engine with power transmitted through a roller drive. These bikes were popular with notables like movie stars Brigitte Bardot and Steve McQueen.
